English: Arts & Humanities A.A.

The English Area of Concentration builds essential analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills for academic and professional success. With courses tailored to all levels—including options for non-native speakers—the program empowers students to become effective communicators and lifelong learners.

Program Information

The English Area of Concentration within Arts and Humanities A.A. offers a variety of literature, writing, and language classes for students pursuing a course of study in English or related fields for transfer to a four-year university.

Courses are taught using a variety of instructional methods designed to enable students to research, analyze, summarize, interpret, synthesize, assess, and communicate responsibly. Literature courses explore a wide variety of cross-cultural works in evolving media that encourage students to appreciate diverse texts for aesthetic value and as a window into the human experience. Students can take journalism and creative writing courses and have the opportunity to contribute to the College newspaper and the College literary magazine.

 

Success in the program is defined by your ability to apply what you’ve learned in real-world scenarios. This program ensures that every student achieves the following core competencies:

  • Collect, document, and evaluate research from a variety of sources for various purposes, including the construction of an argument.
  • Produce presentations and documents that are clear, concise, substantive, and grammatically standard.
  • Identify and evaluate major literary techniques, terms, and trends.
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness through writing, speaking, and literary analysis.
  • Analyze works of literature within their cultural and historical context.
  • Identify and produce different forms of writing for a variety of audiences.
  • Apply and critique the creative process through research, development, and execution of text production.
